In June 2025, an outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease<\/strong> (LSD), also known as Contagious Nodular Dermatitis<\/strong>, was confirmed in Italy. This is a viral disease affecting cattle, primarily transmitted by insect vectors such as flies and mosquitoes, with effects that can severely compromise animal welfare and health security.<\/p>

Lumpy Skin Disease: what you need to know<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Lumpy Skin Disease is not dangerous to humans<\/strong>, but it is one of the notifiable animal diseases<\/strong> under the WOAH (World Organisation for Animal Health) Terrestrial Code<\/strong>. Its main symptoms include:<\/p>

  • High fever<\/li>
  • Widespread skin nodules<\/li>
  • Decreased milk production<\/li>
  • Reproductive issues<\/li><\/ul>

    Its impact is therefore both health-related<\/strong> and economic<\/strong>, especially for farmers, producers and those operating within the food supply chain.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Following confirmation of the outbreak in Italy, the United Kingdom<\/strong> has suspended<\/strong> imports<\/strong> of certain categories of Italian bovine products. This measure specifically applies to:<\/p>

    • Live animals<\/li>
    • Germplasm<\/li>
    • Offal (excluding diaphragm and masseter muscles)<\/li>
    • Raw milk and derivatives, including colostrum<\/li>
    • Untreated hides and skins (except in specific cases defined by the WOAH Code)<\/li>
    • Animal by-products (excluding casings, gelatine, collagen, tallow, hooves and horns) if not heat-treated at a minimum of 65\u202f\u00b0C for 30 minutes<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      UK port health authorities are detaining all Italian products<\/strong> falling into the categories listed above. Even products processed in Italian facilities are subject to this block. Italian veterinary authorities cannot currently issue health certificates<\/strong> for these products. There is a possibility of a partial reopening for pasteurised dairy products<\/strong>, but there is still no official confirmation<\/strong>. A risk assessment is also under way for low-risk composite products<\/strong> containing bovine ingredients.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

      For those working in temperature-controlled transport<\/strong>, it is essential to understand that shipping restricted products now carries a real risk of customs holds and delays<\/strong> in the supply chain.<\/p>

      Fresh Ways advises<\/strong>, at this stage, not to plan shipments to the UK<\/strong> for the categories listed, until further notice<\/strong>. Currently, no end date<\/strong> for the measure has been set by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs)<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
